The description of a tyre's behaviour is not a simple task because of the complexity of its structure and the non-linearity of the contact area. On the other side, the models need to be simple in order to understand the link between a design variable and a model parameter and to make easier the vehicle simulations. In order to solve this problem Pirelli have started developing physical models which enable to study partial aspects of the tyre behaviour. The paper presents the last improvements of the first family of two-dimensional models: the 2D Comfort model and the new 2D Pirelli Handling model, as well as the first results obtained with the development of a 3D model. The 2D Pirelli comfort model enables to face the problem of vibrations and slipping under the contact patch. The handling model is a two dimensional physical model which enables to study the lateral behaviour of the tyre. Besides the limitations of the 2D-simulation the two models are not valid at higher frequencies (the comfort model is validated up to 150 Hz) and they cannot simulate the coupling phenomena in the contact area between the longitudinal and lateral slip. The 3D physical model is obtained merging the structural parameters of the previous 2D models. An alternative approach is the FEA simulation of the deflected tyre; this computation is very accurate but requires a large amount of CPU-time and can not be used for real-time simulations. In two following steps based on a modal approach the dimensions of the model are reduced. This model replaces the structural part of the physical model, thereby reproducing the behaviour of the tyre for frequencies up to 500 Hz, the upper frequency limit being imposed by the number of modes taken into account.
