Sensor systems for detecting near obstacles in front of and behind passenger cars and light trucks in parking and back-up maneuvers and for supervising the blind-spot angle when driving are required to improve safety and comfort. The main reasons for this need are the reduced visibility of advanced car designs and the driver's liability. The following physical principles for these sensor systems are discussed: ultrasonic waves, electric field (capacitors), microwave radar, lidar (laser radar) and IR (Infra-Red) light. Their mode of operation is described and advantages, disadvantages and selection criteria for the mentioned applications will be discussed. Examples of commercially available systems are shown.
