The Intel Connected Car Personal Computer (Car PC) is one of the industry's first integrated platforms to bring personal computing technology and applications to the automobile. It brings to the driver voice controlled applications for navigation, communications, security, safety and entertainment. Other passengers can enjoy additional applications like computer games, movies and productivity programs. The following aspects of implementing Intel's first Connected Car PC Platform are discussed: defining system features and architecture; system partitioning and form factor; chassis design and implementation; the design, fabrication, assembly and debugging of boards. Key system design and implementation tradeoffs are highlighted. Additionally, the key challenges are summarized, that must be addressed by an automotive manufacturer planning to launch a product based on Intel's Car PC Platform reference design.
