Constantly increasing demands of intelligent work machines have caused manufacturers to increase the number of new features in their products. One feature is a traction control system, which helps maintain driving force and steerability of vehicles on any surface with minimum surface damage. This paper deals with control design aspects of displacement controlled implementation of traction control systems (TCS) in hydrostatic power transmissions (HST). Control design aspects and simulation studies of the system have been carried out. Analysis of the system and control algorithm is done by simulation in the PC-environment. The simulation model contains a model of a hydrostatic transmission and models of a vehicle and tyre-road interaction. The control system design includes control of the diesel engine, hydraulic pump and hydraulic motor. Because traction control systems cannot have a specific target slip value, a common PID-algorithm is not used. The control algorithm is based on on-off-control as a function of the slip ratio and wheel acceleration.
