Mobil has developed a unique method to detect and quantify unburned residual fuel in marine engine oils based on electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. This method of analysis is called the Residual Fuel Detection (RFD) Test. Key to the method is the fact that ESR can distinguish unburned fuel vanadium from combusted fuel vanadium. Over 200 used engine oil samples per day can now be analyzed for unburned fuel contamination when incorporating an automated ESR spectrometer with auto-sampler. This rapid test provides a vital component to used engine oil analysis and condition monitoring, particularly when deposits, high viscosity and/or low TBN are concerns. This paper describes the RFD test and the interpretation of its results through simulated studies and practical applications, particularly those involving trend analysis.
