Advanced measuring equipment combined with sophisticated post-processing software is used to investigate gaseous emissions over the full load range of two 400 kW test engines. New transportable equipment has been acquired in order to carry out on-board emission measurements and thus quantify the R.NI.N.'s (Royal Netherlands Navy) contribution to the air pollution. The first results of these on-board measurements both for a diesel engine and a gas turbine, operating over a wide power range are available now. Together with the knowledge gathered from manufacturers and own laboratory tests the problem of part-load behaviour of gas turbine and diesel engines is tackled and some hypotheses will be presented. Based on this a computer program (SHIP PROGNOSIS) was developed to quickly asses total ship/fleet yearly emissions for complicated operational profiles. The paper will show some results.
