The paper reports upon investigations carried out to determine stress distributions in track links in order to avoid 'spalling' of the running surfaces. Numerous experimental and theoretical investigations lead to the result, that spalling is caused by track roller peak loads during machine operation applied on the edges of the track link running surfaces. The acknowledgment of the stress distribution for load cases 'Roll-Over' and 'Impact' lead to an optimized running surface geometry and a specific heat treatment of the track links.
