The piston ring oil film thickness measuring system, described at the 1995 CIMAC Congress, has been further developed and has been installed in the cylinder liner of an Sulzer RTA84C slow speed marine diesel engine. The engine has been comprehensively instrumented, including sensors fitted exactly at top-dead-centre. The film thickness system has been fully integrated with the SIPWA wear measuring equipment and with vessel motion sensors. The operation of the new measuring system is described. Results are presented which show the influence of vessel motion on minimum oil film thickness and ring rotation, the behaviour of the ring exactly at top-dead-centre and a comparison between the ring profile measured inside and outside the engine. Measurements of the effect of cylinder oil viscosity on minimum film thickness have confirmed results obtained earlier, and show that increasing viscosity can reduce the film thickness.
