System design conditions for component cooling are driven by two similar but unique considerations - certification compliance and component reliability. Certification compliance testing requires stacking several worse case assumptions (airplane performance, airplane operation, airplane configuration and ambient temperature) to simulate the highest component temperatures the engine mounted accessories will ever see in the life of the airplane. The proper use of temperatures resulting from certification testing is to address safety and airworthiness regulations and requirements. Typical airplane operation is much less severe than certification testing, which drives typical component temperatures to be less than those measured in certification testing. This paper describes the methods used to determine the two types of component temperature and explains why the typical component temperature should be used for any MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) calculations.
