Propulsion machinery of modern ships, including thruster and power generation, powered by medium- or high speed diesel engines, gas turbines or electric motors, is characterised by complex system configurations, limited material strengths and stringent operational requirements. Most of the power generation and power transfer components in these propulsion systems are highly non-linear in nature. Today the numeric time simulation technique is the most useful methodology for calculation of transient torsional vibration responses, transient thermal loads, system/control stability and electric power oscillations, to verify the system's functionality and to evaluate operational limitations and possibilities. This methodology is by many experienced to be a time consuming and expensive analysis technique. This paper shows that based on modern computer software, using visual programming that strongly implies graphics and an object oriented view, it is now possible to perform complete and cost-effective system simulation analyses and operational evaluations of complex propulsion machinery.
