A 1:4 scaled model of a 50ft modern sailing yacht, designed by Mortain and Mavrikios according to the BOC Challenge rules and regulations has been extensively tested in the towing tank of the Laboratory for Ship and Marine Hydrodynamics (LSMH) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). The performance of the model in calm water was evaluated, both without and with appendages for a grid of heeling and leeway angles. This paper is a first presentation of experimental results on sailing yacht testing in the facility of the LSMH. The experimental results referring to the drag, the side force, the dynamic C.G. rise and the dynamic trim, for a set of displacements, are presented. The former are also compared with the respective estimations based on regression equations. The performance of the yacht is predicted using both, the Gimcrack coefficients and the IMS Velocity Prediction Program (VPP). Useful conclusions are drawn following the discussion of the experimental results and their comparison with the corresponding predictions provided by the currently available methods.
