Measurements on rear axle no-load losses, efficiency and oil temperature have been performed. Here, two different loading conditions were considered, the 'Hillclimb' and 'Highway' condition, that are representative for rear axle loading in vehicle use. It was found that the no-load loss of a hub-reduction axle could be substantially reduced by lowering the oil level in the driving head. Other changes such as encapsulation of the crownwheel only had minor influence. Video recordings have been made of the oil circulation in the axle. Efficiency measurements on a hypoid axle showed that at 'Hillclimb' the oil type and its chemical composition play a major role in the efficiency and the temperature. At 'Highway' the efficiency was mainly influenced by the oil level and the oil viscosity.
