Light weight construction is considered to be a quite attractive principle of design. Especially for transportation vehicles customers have a demand for reduced fuel consumption motivated by reduction of operating costs, consciousness on environment and legal limitations. A reduction of the moved mass of those structures can help to reach this goal. From the application of light weight materials arises the necessity to join them by e.g. thermal processes. Especially at thin cross sections, as used in light weight construction, distortions are critical, therefore laser beam welding with its characteristic high processing speed and small heat affected zone (HAZ) can be a process for the realization of light weight structures. Furthermore laser processes offer new design possibilities by covered joints, welding of different thickmesses, welding of a wide variety of material and joining of dissimilar metals. Several examples of laser joined structural elements consisting of light weight materials demonstrate the potentials of laser beam processes for light weight constructions.
