The paper describes the investigation into the manoeuvrability of a trimaran displacement ship undertaken at UCL as a part of an extensive study on the hydrodynamic performance of this novel ship type. The turning ability of the ship has been identified as a crucial criterion for accessing the manoeuvrability of the trimaran ship. This has been investigated through theoretical analysis and then been verified by the results of experiments undertaken at DRA Haslar. The hydrodynamic forces due to the presence of the side hull has been analysed using a combination of theoretical and empirical methods. The method for the calculating of the velocity derivatives of the three hulls is presented. The steady turning characteristics of the trimaran ship is compared with an equivalent displacement monohull ship. The contribution of the side hull propulsion to the turning ability of the trimaran ship is also evaluated and discussed. Finally, the effects of the side hull location and draught on turning ability are systematically examined to provide a broad view on how the side hull configuration would effect this aspect trimaran performance.
