Deck wetness is a major factor limiting the performance of a ship in rough weather and is dependent on the detailed design of the bow. Bow design has relied largely on empirical data and the ship designers' experience. However, with the exception of freeboard, there has not been universal agreement on the relative merits of bow design factors such as flare, stem rake or knuckles. This paper describes a computer based design tool for use early in the ship design process to quantify the effects of changes in the above water hull form on severity of deck wetness. This is a non linear time domain simulation which predicts the ship motions in head seas based upon the instantaneous forces on the hull. Account is also taken of the calm water bow wave and the distortion of the incident wave due to the oscillatory motion of the ship. A validation of the design tool using model tests of a frigate with interchangeable bows is also presented. The results are encouraging, with the tool predicting the number of wetness events well for two of the three bows tested. The results highlight ways in which the simulation may be improved.
