Single baffles based on heat activated foams have found increasing use as body cavity filler to inhibit noise propagation through hollow body channels of passenger cars. While the benefit of double decoupled layers in noise reduction is well known, no double baffle design was economically feasible previously, due to the limitations of conventional heat activated foams. A double baffle design based on preprogrammed heat activated foam technology is introduced. The preprogramming imparts directional control that enables more effective filling and makes double baffle design possible. The differences between preprogrammed and conventional foams are reviewed, the advantages of preprogrammed foams are presented, and the benefits of the double baffle over the single baffle design are demonstrated by acoustic testing.
