The prevention of marine biofouling by electrochemical disinfection with a newly developed conductive paint electrode having low resistance is described. This electrode is prepared by dispersion of graphite and carbon black into urethane resin paint and subsequent coating on nylon or PET (polyethylene terephthalate). The specific resistance of the electrode decreased with increasing content of carbon black or increasing content of graphite-carbon black mixture. It was almost constant above 7.7 % by weight of carbon black or 33.3 % by weight of graphite-carbon black mixture. An electrode containing 25.6 % by weight of graphite and 7.7 % by weight of carbon black has the specific resistance 0.057 ohm.cm. This mixing ratio was used for electrochemical disinfection experiments. Applying a potential of 1.2 V (SCE), attached Vibrio alginolyticus cells were completely killed. Cells attached to the electrode can be removed by applying a negative potential. Generation of chlorine did not occur when a potential of 1.2 V (SCE) was applied for 30 min and a change of pH was not observed when a potential of -0.6 V (SCE) was applied. As can be seen in epifluorescence micrographs an alternating potential inhibits a microbial film on the electrode and reduces biofouling of yarn coated with the conductive paint without generating toxic substances.
