A method and results are presented about the evaluation of driver acceptance of a collision warning system based on a microwave radar installed on a D segment Sedan. The sensor is interfaced to a data processing unit which drives the user interface, consisting of a bargraph type LED (Light Emitting Diode) display located at the right side of the main instrument panel, and a loudspeaker for acoustic warning. The warning is given on the basis of a safety distance criterion with respect to potential obstacles in the path of the vehicle. Two different visual display schemes are implemented: a simpler one, giving only pre-warning and warning signals through two LED's, and a more complete one in which the alarms are associated to a bargraph display giving qualitatively the safety distance and the position of the potential obstacle. In either cases, an acoustic warning is activated when the potential obstacle is very close with respect to the safety distance. The road test was designed in order to get information about a series of questions related to: the overall acceptance of the system, the driver evaluation of the user interfaces, and suggestions about possible further improvements. Tests were conducted with 24 male subjects evenly distributed in age. All of them were experienced drivers. The test drives were conducted on a fixed highway course, selected for the variety of road design and traffic situations. Day and night trips were performed. Test methodology is described that make use of questionnaires and structured interviews; a pre-test/post-test scheme was adopted in order to relate the drivers' evaluations after the tests with their expectations about the systems.
