Progress in the development of a new generation of navigation systems results in a large extension of their abilities. Especially the integration of vehicle bus systems for data interchange will have a great impact on the data handling. Connected with the car radio and RDS-TMC, mobile phones or other new media like DAB, navigation systems will become the main in-car-system to collect, process, distribute and depict information. Regarding the last point a controversial discussion is ongoing about the extent an average driver is capable to deal with all this information without being distracted from his task of driving a car safely. It is shown how to extract more information from the database of navigation systems to provide a preview of the road ahead, especially regarding bend radius, junctions and the current distances to these objects. Approaches are described, how to include this kind of additional information in driver assistance systems to influence vehicle handling which facilitates vehicle control, relieves strain on the driver and enhances active vehicle safety.
