Side impact protection has become one of the most important fields of actvity in passive safety development. A very short distance is available to absorb a sufficient amount of energy to protect the occupants. The introduction of paddings, made of lightweight energy-absorbing materials, makes it possible to obtain good structural behaviour and reduce the weight of vehicle. IDIADA has developed a new cost-effective procedure for padding optimization. It combines full-scale crash tests and sled tests. The use of both tools saves time in the car development process. This technical paper describes the procedure and aims to demonstrate how its application is useful for the passive safety engineer.
