Despite universal awareness and widespread application of GPS (Global Positioning System), some demanding requirements for vehicle tracking are better satisfied by terrestrially-based, low-frequency systems. The various options are reviewed, considering particularly performance in inner cities and other environments, with limited satellite visibility. Examples are given of current applications which use the Datatrak integrated location and communications system in preference to GPS. Results using Loran-C, and recent Datatrak development work, are presented to demonstrate that the use of H-field antennae can greatly improve inner-city tracking performance. For the future, hybrid systems are shown to offer further performance enhancements.
