Fatigue crack growth in the side structure of large ships is considered. The purpose is to improve fatigue life prediction of structural parts near the water-line. The crack growth is governed by time varying local stresses in the detail where the crack is developing. These stresses are influenced by global moments in the ship hull from waves and ship motions, and also variations of the local pressure on the side plates near the actual detail. External loads as well as internal pressure from a fluid cargo are considered. A simple time domain algorithm is proposed. A case study on a realistic ship is carried out. The relative importance of global and local response and internal loads is investigated. The contribution to fatigue damage from few but extreme sea states is identified. The method may be applied in design to verify needed fatigue capacity, but also for inspection planing as crack growth during intervals between inspections may be predicted.
