A new method is presented as drawn by some changes introduced in the ITTC'78 method for predicting full scale power performance of screw-propelled ships. The new method doesn't need any resistance data in towing condition, but requires, in conjunction with open water propeller characteristics both on model and ship scale, measurements taken in self-propulsion model tests carried out, for each test speed, at the propeller load realised through the friction deduction force corresponding to the real ship self-propulsion point. According to that method, the true load at which the ship propeller will operate is assessed by separating and analysing the viscous and potential flows via an innovative form factor concept applied in self-propulsion conditions. Apart from detailed fundamentals of the proposed method, some results and comparisons are presented, which allow to make a good appraisal of the method value.
