The development of automotive high speed direct injection (DI) diesel engines is reviewed, from their introduction in the mid-1980s, to the latest multi-valve engines announced recently. A comprehensive list of production high speed DI engines is contained in the text. Performance and emissions characteristics of prototype 4-valve per cylinder DI diesel engines, from 2.5 to 1.3 litres capacity, are described. Fuel injection equipment, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and regulated emissions achievements are also reviewed. The 4-valve per cylinder configuration provides significant benefits, in terms of low speed torque and emissions. The 1.3 litre inline 3-cylinder engine was the power unit for the Ford Ka 'Step 1' which was displayed at the 1996 Berlin Motor Show. This vehicle achieved 3.1 litres/100 km fuel economy, in a specially prepared lightweight, low drag Ka. It is concluded that this future technology will be a major contribution to light-duty DI diesels in meeting future emissions standards and for them to remain tne most efficient prime mover for passenger cars and light trucks.
