Recent work deals with the estimation of vehicle speed over ground during straight forward driving. This paper presents the straightforward extension to cornering driving situations utilising an observer for lateral movement. The whole system consists of a Fuzzy Logic System to estimate the vehicle speed and an observer to estimate the side slip angle. The observer enables a transformation of the wheel speeds to the center of gravity which can be interpreted as the correction of systematic errors for the computing of speed over ground. The aim of the presented system is to calculate the tyre longitudinal and lateral slip for further estimation or control process. With the presented combination the wheel slip can be calculated during all driving situations. The observer supported fuzzy estimator is part of a great project, which deals with an enhanced ABS system to stabilise the car during cornering and also during critical braking actions.
