The monitoring of a microtunneler/soil system has shown that machine performance is only minimally affected by the length of the crossing while geological conditions can influence the drilling process to a great extend. For this reason the analysis of the performances of microtunnel vs. ground properties has been developed on the basis of real site measurements, in non cohesive soils. Microtunnels have been systematically applied to cross railways, highways, canals and rivers in order to construct the Mediterranean Gaselines. In some of these microtunnels, with an external diameter of 1450mm and 1960mm, where steel pipes or concrete linings have been installed, and which were excavated in the Po valley, the performances of the machines were continuously monitored and the ground properties were measured with laboratory tests. The performances have been compared with the granulometric distribution of the related parameters. The obtained correspondences and relationships are presented and discussed in this paper.
