This paper compares models of different types of vehicle suspension, viz.: conventional, active and semi-active. The control laws for the semi-active suspensions considered were established in previous work by the authors. In this work the authors highlight the different behaviour of the several typologies of suspensions not only in frequency domain, but also over time. Both analyses were found to be necessary in assessing suspension performance. The response to a bump input shows particularly interesting results. The comparison has been performed among suspensions whose parameters have been optimized by means of a proper analysis. The study demonstrated that semi-active suspension systems can exceed the performance of conventional suspensions in all respects, and approach that of active suspensions.
