his paper addresses a set of control issues, relating to the multiple demands placed upon road-going vehicle suspension systems. There exists an ever-present compromise, resulting from the need to cope simultaneously with a set of conflicting requirements related to road-holding, terrain and passenger comfort. The demands of uneven terrain, married with passenger comfort requirements, suggest the need for moderate stiffness and damping parameters, while attitude control during cornering (or, more generally, non-straight-line motion) points towards a requirement for relatively high stiffness and damping. In this paper, a novel approach to the problem is presented. An active vehicle suspension controller is described, free from the constraints of a single compromise control philosophy. Instead, a multi-mode control strategy is discussed, whereby one of several distinct control strategies is invoked, depending upon the exact conditions pertaining at the time. Key issues affecting the behaviour of this system are explored, including the crucial aspect of system behaviour during transitions between control modes.
