The aim of this investigation was to identify the strength capacity of an able-bodied population, whilst simulating turning a car steering wheel using a steering aid. It has been suggested that assessing only certain points of the 360 deg may estimate an inappropriate isometric measure of the subject which could in turn lead to an inability to steer the vehicle or steering which is too sensitive to use. Ten subjects, without any history of upper limb disease activity, participated in the study. The steering rig used was designed and built at the University of Sunderland and comprises a steering peg (mushroom design) attached to a standard 38 cm diameter steering wheel, a car seat with full adjustment, and a strain gauge attached to the steering column, transmitting information to a computer via a data acquisition board. After calibration, each subject was required to exert a maximum voluntary force on the steering peg, over a six second period, at 30 deg intervals throughout the 360 deg. The test was conducted in both a clockwise and anticlockwise direction, with the subject recording any perceived pain experienced, and ranked the perceived exertion accordingly. Although restrictions were placed on the positioning of the subject undertaking the protocol, the technique and muscles used were not isolated, in order to obtain further external validity, given the applied nature of the task. The subject was given a two minute rest between each contraction to ensure validity in the experiment.
