This paper presents a modeling method to analyze the frequency characteristics of a suspension system. The method employs the superelement and lumped methods for structural modeling of flexible bodies, and it is incorporated with a multibody dynamics formulation in which joint nonlinearities can be considered effectively. To verify the accuracy of the results obtained by the modeling method, a quarter car test was made. The results showed that the computational model provided fairly accurate frequency characteristics for the suspension system. Other useful conclusions were also drawn from this study. The suspension system transmits considerable amount of vibration up to 200 Hz frequency range. The higher frequency characteristics of the suspension system are significantly affected by the flexibility and damping characteristics of the shock absorber including the coil spring. The suspension system has good isolation characteristics in the usual ride frequency range (0 up to 10 Hz) but not in the range from 50 Hz to 200 Hz, which may affect the interior noise significantly. The tire elastic and damping effects influence the suspension characteristics in the range from 100 Hz to 200 Hz. The results obtained by the computational model with a simple tire was compared the results obtained by the test with a real tire. Comparing the test and simulation results, it was found that the suggested modeling method produced fairly accurate simulation results compared to the test results. So the modeling method suggested in this study may be used for other suspension system.
