A numerical solution for the three-dimensional transient motion of a marine cable during installation is presented for the case of a cable laying vessel arbitrarily changing speed and direction while laying out cable with seabed slack. The cable transient behaviour is governed by the numerical solution of a set of non-linear partial differential equations with the solution methodology incorporating both spatial and temporal integration. The space integration is carried out by dividing the cable into n straight elements with equilibrium relationsships and geometric compatibility equations satisfied for each element. The position of each element is described by its elevation and azimuth angles and, therefore, a system of 2n non-linear ordinary differential equations is established. The time integration of this set of equations is performed using a high order Runge-Kutta technique. The results presented for the two case studies used to illustrate this model clearly demonstrate the highly non-linear nature of this cable laying problem. Of particular interest is the fact that the transient times associated with the cable configuration and tension are substantially longer than the time for completion of a ship manoeuvre. This has significant practical implications for cable laying routes which require relatively rapid changes in ship speed and heading and the subsequent positioning of the cable on the seabed with sufficient slack. This problem is further complicated with increasing water depth. The numerical solution demonstrates the significant influence of oceanic currents on the cable configuration and subsequent seabed touch down position. Given the uncertainty associated with predictions of the profiles of oceanic currents in the water column, this raises the substantial practical difficulty of ensuring that the cable lies in a specified corridor on the seabed.
