The objective of this study was to characterize four different carbon filter materials in terms of their adsorption properties, to determine their performance in controlling odors in automotive cabins. Carbon-impregnated cellulose (E), polyester carbonized fiber (B), polypropylene carbonized fiber (F), and carbon impregnated polyester (D) materials were examined. All four materials exhibit similar initial butane uptake curves at short times, but marked differences were apparent at long times, where D/r2 differed by more than a factor of two. Significant differences were also found in their butane capacities, and surface areas and pore volumes. The carbonized materials performed better than the carbon-impregnated materials, and F performed the best. None of them compared well to activated carbon.
