Global air transport is growing rapidly, causing increases in fuel consumption and air pollution. Because the number of aircraft is much less than the number of motor vehicles the contribution of aircraft to air pollution is less than that of motor vehicles. It is shown that CO emissions from aircraft are about 5.2 % of those from motor vehicles. The ratios are approximately 3.8 % for HC, 1.2 % for NO(x), 1.8 % for PM, and 1.9 % for SO2. The spread of pollution from motor vehicles was considered to be approximately 20 km, whereas the study area is equivalent to a circle 5 km in diameter. The dominant wind around the airport is from north and northeast. Therefore, the residential areas to the south and southwest of the airport are affected by this pollution. Because the HC content in the air is high because of the aircraft, the formation of secondary pollutants occurs. In the vicinity of the airport when the meteorological conditions are favourable at busy times, between 07.00 and 09.30, photochemical smog can form. The intensity of air traffic is highest at Istanbul Atatürk airport on Mondays and Thursdays. However, traffic daily becomes intense during 07.00 - 09.30 and 15.00 - 22.00.
