This paper presents the results of a feasibility study on reconfigurable control concepts for rotorcraft. The intent of the study was to demonstrate the application of techniques developed for fixed-wing aircraft to rotorcraft. New approaches were developed for fault detection and control reconfiguration in the rotating frame which is inherent to rotorcraft. These new developments include the application of fault detection and isolation techniques to rotor flapping sensors and control mechanisms. The use of redundant primary rotating frame controls is also introduced. Examples are given of a rotating frame sensor failure detection and of a control reconfiguration following a rotor servo-flap failure. Hardware and software requirements of the conceptual reconfigurable control system are assessed and key technology areas requiring future research are identified. This study concludes that many existing fixed-wing techniques are directly transferable to rotorcraft and that reconfigurable controls for rotorcraft is a realizable goal.
