This paper is concerned with limit state design of offshore pipelines. It is based on the Limit State Design Guideline for Offshore Pipelines and the Reliability Based Design Handbook: Offshore Pipelines, both developed as the final products of the SUPERB Project. The Design Guideline provides limit state design criteria to verify that factored design loads do not exceed factored design capacities for any of the complete pre-defined set of limit states to be considered in design. The Design Handbook, as an alternative to the Design Guideline, allows for direct reliability analysis, e.g., in case of qualifying new concepts or recalibration for a more limited design scope. The aspects to be covered in this paper include structural reliability analysis, load effects and limit states, uncertainty modelling and target safety levels. The limit state modelling comprises hoop stress design, impact, buckling and collapse, fatigue and fracture. General procedures for requalification of existing pipelines are further outlined.
