The aims of the present research are (1) the improvement of knowledge of the physical phenomena contributing to resistance under the design waterline and (2) the numerical prediction of this resistance contribution, the trajectory of the ice floes sliding along the hull and the amount of ice drifting into the propeller domain. Extensive model tests were carried out to investigate the physical phenomena contributing to resistance under the design waterline. An icebreaker model with a Simplified Waas Bow was tested. Forces on three segments and the pressure field on the forebody between the hull and the submerged ice floes were measured. The experiments showed very low pressure areas between ice and hull at the forebody. The low pressure, which was measured for the first time, was found to be the dominating phenomenon contributing to resistance under the design waterline. A method to predict numerically the floe motion along the hull and the resistance caused by the sliding ice floes is presented.
