One determining factor for the future world shipping development is the growth of the containerized traffic. According to Containerization International Yearbook the total world container port traffic reached 124,9 mill TEU in 1994 and grew steadily over the last years. Troughout the period 1986-1994 the traffic increased by an average of 9,4 % per annum. At least 46 % of the total world port traffic, measured in TEU is attributable to countries in the Far East. Europe realized 23 % and North America had a share of 17 % on the world container port traffic in 1994. According to the records of the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL), Bremen, the American ports have highest degree of contanerization. Described is detailed in this article: Hamburgs port development plan 1997, ports of Bremen, Cotainer port Rotterdam and Antwerp. A table show the world traffic league by TEU and tonnage.
