A series of tests were carried out on the Volvo road simulator using sinusoidal excitations to investigate the cause or causes of systematic errors in the TRL (Transport Res. Lab., Crowthorne, GB) wheel load instrumentation techniques. This was followed by simulated runs over the 'Smooth' and 'Medium' wheel track profiles of the TRL test track at speeds of 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 mph to check the ability of the road simulator to replicate the dynamic motions of the heavy vehicle on a known road profile. An air, a steel and a rubber suspended tandem axle semi-trailer bogie were used for the tests. The tests have shown that dynamic wheel load can be measured to 1-2 % accuracy by using the improved vehicle based instrumentation technique compared to the currently used technique where only 5-10 % overall accuracy is possible for one particular suspension. The current technique uses bending gauges, which are known to be subject to anomalous readings of the roll component of wheel load, and a method that estimates the correction needed for the acceleration of wheel components outboard of the strain gauges. The improved technique uses shear gauges and a dynamic calibration technique that corrects for the angular and vertical accelerations of the wheel components outboard of the strain gauges. There were significant differences between simulated and actual test track dynamic wheel loads. For the air, steel and rubber suspensions the correlation between track and road simulator results were poor over the 'Medium' track profile. The discrepancies over the 'Smooth' track profile results were smaller. The errors in current dynamic wheel load measurement techniques cannot account for these discrepancies. Investigation of other possible causes for the discrepancies revealed 2-3 times greater axle roll accelerations on the simulator compared to axle roll accelerations on the test track.
