This paper explores methods property owners can use to increase property values by using APMs. It uses as an example two retail centers in Palm Springs, California. The value of a retail center is dependent upon the amount of sales that the center can generate. If an Automated People Mover (APM) can increase the number of shoppers in a retail center, the value of the center will correspondently increase. The APM proposed for Palm Springs will connect two major retail centers to several hotels in the downtown, to the Convention Center, and to the Palm Springs Airport. As this paper explains, the increased sales expected from APM induced trips to the two retail centers will result in higher property values. The expected increase in property values offset a significant portion of the cost of the APM, justifying private investment in a small scale automated public transit system. The author expects that commercial centers in other parts of the world can replicate this model to improve transportation in those centers.
