The paper proposes that under certain conditions, pulsed cable technology can provide a level of service superior to shuttle technology and for less capital cost than continuous cable technology. Equations of motion were used to calculate and compare the combined waiting times and vehicle travel times for users of pulsed and shuttle cable technologies. Numbers of stations, terminal to terminal distances, numbers of vehicles (in the case of pulsed technology), maximum velocities, and passenger unloading/loading times were varied to represent realistic application scenarios. For these scenarios, a determination was made of how unpleasant waiting time would have to be relative to in-vehicle travel time for the pulsed technology to be preferred subjectively by users. Results are presented in the form of graphs and a table. Recent advances in pulsed system technology also are discussed.
