As part of the planning and schematic design for the new terminal facilities at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, named the World Travel Center (WTC), a monorail concept has been developed. As currently envisioned, the WTC would include a major new international terminal with 19 wide body gates and a separate linear satellite concourse with about 54 jet gates and 37 commuter aircraft positions. The planned size of the facility, with the satellite nearly a mile (1.6 km) long, would have unacceptably long walking distances without the use of some form of automated people mover. A bi-directional loop monorail system has been selected as the preferred configuration to maximize passenger convenience. The concept would offer relativlely short walking distances, no transfer requirements, and minimum level changes, to help restore convenient passenger access characteristics in a world of ever expanding airport sizes.
