Airbags are proven lifesaving technology. They have saved more than 1000 lives since the mid-1980's. The downside is an increasing number of adults and children who have sustained serious and even fatal injuries from the very high forces generated by airbags as they deploy. Studies of fatalities in cars equipped with airbags suggest that, although airbags currently are performing very well to protect drivers in frontal crashes, a reduction in airbag energy may benefit drivers, particularly unbelted and shorter drivers, in an wide range of crash severities. Short-term modifications to reduce the aggressiveness of airbags are needed until more sophisticated systems are available that will tailor airbag deployments according to occupant characteristics, belt use, and crash severity.
