In this paper, a new type of suspension is introduced in which the dampers of the front and rear suspensions are connected by capillary tubes. Firstly, the expressions for the vibration transmissibility are derived by linearizing the equations of the mass flow through the capillary tubes on the assumption of small variations in volume and pressure of the damper chambers. Then the preview control effect on the rear suspension of such a suspension system is analyzed, and quasi-sky-hook systems for the semi-active controls of the vertical vibration and pitch motion are designed to improve the performence of the connected damper system. Computer simulations are carried out to demonstrate the effectivenes of the semi-actively controlled suspension with the connected dampers. The bigger the damping coefficient of connection, the smaller the peaks of the rear suspension during the transient responses because of the preview effect on the rear suspension of connected dampers. Proper control of the connected dampers can improve the deterioration of frequency characteristics of the pitch motion. The connected dampers can provide an efficient preview effect with less consumption of energy because of the ability to obtain an equivalent negative damping, which is impossible in the case of conventional suspensions with independent dampers.
