The movement and control of spare parts in the airline industry is often unpredictable, highly capital intensive and there is constant pressure to increase efficiency and reduce costs. The Material Requirements Planning system (MRP) is now being used in a small but significant number of airline operator and maintenance service organisations around the world. This investigation examines the experiences of those companies using the system and asks whether it can be applied successfully throughout the industry. This survey is based on responses from 175 out of 283 airline operator and maintenance service organisations world-wide. It emerged that 152 aviation companies are currently using the Reorder Point system (ROP) whilst 23 have adopted the Material Requirements Planning system (MRP). The intention behind this paper is to examine the experience and successes of those 23 companies which are using the MRP system. The survey indicates that MRP is being taken seriously in aircraft maintenance. However, it is more difficult to implement in the aircraft maintenance environment than in a commercial environment, as the need for spare parts is unpredictable. But if the obstacles are understood and a sound plan realised by good management, MRP can be successfully implemented. The benefits can be substantial.
