The performance of a single rotor Wankel (rotary) research engine fuelled on hydrogen by means of external mixture formation has been investigated. The engine was operated both throttled and un-throttled over a wide range of charge mixture strengths without the occurence of back-fire or pre-ignition commonly incurred with hydrogen operation in reciprocating engines. When compared with gasoline operation, such a fuelling system resulted in considerably decreased maximum power, but increased brake thermal efficiency at part load. Part load emissions of oxides of nitrogen were found to be negligible. Work is continuing with the developmenmt of a direct injection hydrogen fuelled Wankel engine.
