Lockheed Martin Astronautics recently conducted a comprehensive set of acoustic tests to support NASA's Cassini program. The primary goal was to evaluate the performance of two new payload fairing acoustic blanket designs under fullscale test conditions. Secondary goals included evaluating the effect of partial blanket coverage, mapping the acoustic levels within the payload fairing and determining the vibro-acoustic response of the fairing. This article will focus on the performance of the acoustic blankets, the effect of partial blanket coverage on the acoustic levels within the payload fairing and the analytical prediction model. A model has been developed to predict acoustic levels within the payload fairing, with the goal of providing accurate acoustic predictions to the payload user. Additionally, this article will discuss the difference between chamber test data and acoustic data acquired during launch of a Titan IV launch vehicle.
