In this study, factors influencing coated surface roughness on both galvannealed and galvanized steel were determined, with the purpose of implementing a control strategy to provide a more uniform product. Coating roughness control can be achieved through: 1) Optimization of the incoming substrate roughness. The higher the substrate roughness, the higher the coated roughness for both galvannealed and galvanized steel. 2) Optimization of coating structure. Higher iron galvannealed coatings are smoother, but iron must be limited to maintain acceptable coating adhesion. Galvanize roughness is optimized by minimizing Zn/Fe intermetallic growth through bath aluminum control. 3) Optimization of temper rolling practices. Temper rolling of galvannealed steel can produce a surface which is smoother than either the original strip or the roll. Temper rolling of a nitrogen-wiped, galvanized steel produces a surface which is rougher than the original strip, but smoother than the roll.
