Nowadays cars are designed to protect the passengers by sacrificing themselves during a crash. This requires new materials which efficiently absorb the energy impacting on the passenger during the collision. Polyurethanes (PUR) made from Bayfill EA developed for this purpose help to meet the legislative rules as well as the needs of the automotive industry. In crash simulation tests at speeds up to 30 km/h it is demonstrated that Bayfill EA paddings are a specific PUR development for the passenger protection inside a car. The high and anisotropic efficiency of energy absorption, minor temperature dependance, low weight and easy processing make Bayfill EA foam systems superior materials. Current and future applications such as side pads, knee bolsters and head impact protections made from Bayfill EA are discussed in detail.
