Aerothermal enviroments as encountered during the reentry of spaceplanes or during the cruise of hypersonic vehicles represent a complex loading for thermal protection systems (TPS). Designed as light weight structures TPS is vulnerable to vibroacoustic fatigue caused by the pressure fluctuations of the attached or separated flow. Because of the complex interactions between the loading forces and the resulting structural response an analytical treatment is difficult. The authors have designed and built a thermoacoustic facility which recently became operational. This facility is capable to produce surface temperatures up to 1300 deg C at sound pressure levels up to 160 dB. After a description of the facility typical thermoacoustic tests on various TPS designs are presented.
