This paper focuses on the use of magnesium alloys for structural material, in the context of thir application to automobile parts. Among the commonly available metals, magnesium alloys are the lightest in weight. This paper summarizes the material's application possibilities, required properties, examples of actual parts products, and the issues concerning the expansion of the application of this material. An automobile comprises over 30000 pieces of parts. These parts are made of various materials such as steel, light metals, rubber, glass and so forth. The use of aluminum alloys and plastics is increasing steadily. In the quest to improve fuel economy by replacing current materials with lighter materials, the use of aluminum and magnesium alloys and plastics is expected to further increase in the future. In order for magnesium to play a greater role in reducing the weight of the automobile, some issues must be resolved such as to establish a manufacturing process and a stable supply of magnesium alloys that offers cost advantage (over aluminum), to establish a highly efficient technology for casting large parts, thixomolding processes other than diecasting, and extrusion and press processing technologies aimed at further integrating parts and enhancing their added value and to develop highly efficient and high-quality magnesium recycling technology and to maintain a recycling infrastructure.
